Cable Laying Bucket Guide: Sizes, Workflow and How to Choose

A cable laying bucket is a wide, shallow excavator bucket built for the last two steps of every cable trench: laying the cable and pulling the spoil back over it. Crews that dig with a normal digging bucket and backfill with the same bucket move the same soil twice. A cable laying bucket is sized so that one pass drops the spoil back into the trench and a second pass leaves the surface roughly level, which is why utility and solar-farm contractors keep one on the second machine.

Interface codes follow the attachment, not the machine – the same rule used across all KaiVoy excavator attachments. If you are unsure which code your quick hitch uses, send us the machine model and we confirm it before production.

Where it fits in the trench workflow

  • Open the trench with a digging bucket – the narrow profile keeps the spoil heap close to the edge.
  • Lay and protect the cable – the cable laying bucket width matches the trench, so the operator can feather spoil over the cable without dropping large clods onto it.
  • Backfill and level – one or two passes pull the remaining spoil in; finish with a grading bucket or checking the attachment specifications where the surface has to be left clean.

How to choose the width

Match the bucket width to the trench, not the other way round. A 300 mm bucket over a 200 mm trench doubles the handling work; a 200 mm bucket on a 300 mm trench leaves ridges that someone has to knock down by hand. Machine class sets the ceiling: a 1.5 t mini excavator should stay in the 200 – 220 mm range, while a 5 t machine handles 300 mm without working the hydraulics. Full geometry for every model is on the individual product pages linked in the table above.

FAQ

Can a cable laying bucket replace a digging bucket?

No. It is a backfill and finishing tool. Keep a digging bucket for opening hard ground and switch to the cable laying bucket for the spoil-return passes.

Do I need a special coupler?

No – order the model that matches the coupler code you already run (S30-180, S40 or S45). If your hitch is a different standard, coupler adapters are usually the cheaper fix.

How do I get a price?

Request a quote – Prices depend on width, steel grade and order quantity, so every enquiry is quoted individually – nothing on this site is a fixed price.
